Politics Triumphs Science

Politics wins, science loses in coyote hunting decision

Despite repeated assurances that hunting coyotes will not affect population numbers, state officials regrettably decided to allow hunters 5 more weeks to target and kill these amazing creatures. Coyotes are social, family-oriented animals much like wolves and are fiercely territorial which effectively regulates their own numbers in a local area. They are affectionate, individual beings with intrinsic worth just like us. I have even witnessed old adults playing with their offspring.  My recently released 300 page book, Suburban Howls (www.easterncoyoteresearch.com), details many of these important findings.

Instead of embracing my research, state wildlife officials have made it nearly impossible for me to study the very same animals that they just extended the hunting season on. They have made it clear I will NOT receive renewed research permits for my humane views toward coyote management.  In an age focused on reducing cruelty to animals, I wonder if they would allow their pet dogs to be treated the same way.

Politics and appeasing the <1% of the population that hunts in MA is clearly more important to Mass Wildlife officials than listening to sound science. This is a sad day for our wildlife. As for the coyotes, with friends like that, who needs enemies?
